A Different Thursday
When the repaired oven warmed, Owen baked one extra loaf. He waited until Tessa arrived, then asked whether she would like breakfast somewhere he was not working. She looked at the flour on his coat. "Only if you sit down." They went to the little cafe opposite the hospital and ordered toast made from somebody else's bread. Outside, the snow began to thaw. Nothing dramatic happened. They ate slowly, talked about their families, and arranged another Thursday. Owen discovered that a morning could be small and wonderful at once.
